Short answer: CVT shudder, a vibration like driving over rumble strips when pulling away at low speed, is most often caused by old CVT fluid that has lost its friction properties. A jerk or slow engagement when cold usually points to hardened seals and lost hydraulic pressure. A whining noise or real slipping can mean belt or pulley wear, which needs a workshop.

Many popular cars in Malaysia use a CVT, including the Honda City and Jazz, Nissan Almera and several Perodua models, so this is one of the most common gearbox complaints.
What it feels like
- A shake or judder when pulling away from a stop, often at 10 to 40 km/h.
- Shudder when going uphill slowly or creeping in traffic.
- A delay or jerk when you shift into D or R on a cold morning.
- Revs rising without the car picking up speed (more serious).
The usual causes
- Old or degraded CVT fluid. CVT fluid carries special friction additives. As it ages, the belt or chain grips the pulleys less smoothly and you feel judder. Change it at the interval in your car’s manual with KM+ CVT Fully Synthetic Fluid.
- Hardened seals and lost hydraulic pressure. The CVT uses oil pressure to clamp the belt and engage the clutch. Hard seals leak pressure, especially when cold. KM+ AT Fix-IT restores seal elasticity without opening the gearbox.
- Worn belt, chain or pulleys. Usually brings a whine, metal particles in the fluid or real slipping. This is a workshop job.
- Worn engine mounts. They can make a normal take-off feel like shudder. A workshop can check them quickly.
Go to a workshop first if
- There is a warning light or the car goes into limp mode.
- You hear a loud whine or grinding.
- The fluid smells burnt or has metal particles in it.
Keeping a CVT healthy
Change the fluid on time and add KM+ Nano CVT Treatment at each service. It reduces belt and chain wear and slippage, helps prevent shudder and extends fluid life. One 150 ml bottle treats 4 to 8 litres of CVT fluid.
Common questions
Is CVT shudder dangerous?
It is not usually dangerous right away, but it gets worse and wears the belt and pulleys faster. Have it checked before it turns into slipping.
Can I use normal ATF in a CVT?
No. CVTs need a CVT fluid with the right friction properties. Using the wrong fluid can cause shudder and damage.
Not sure which applies to your car?
Send KM+ your car make, model, year, mileage and what you notice. We will tell you honestly whether a KM+ product will help, or whether you need a workshop first.
